London in New York

LondonInNewYork_comp

Brilliant creative director Carolyn London (think Don Draper if he was a badass bosslady, and not a jerk) has launched her own agency called London in New York. I first met Carolyn when she hired me to shoot her brain child for the Metropolitan Opera - the Last Night at the Met blog which I've been doing since 2013. For London in New York she is teaming up once again with long time collaborator Michael Vadino. I was honored to shoot the brand spanking new portraits for their ensuing world domination.

Richard Christiansen, founder of Chandelier Creative, NYC, March 2012

For menswear retailer Park & Bond I recently made portraits of some of the stylish real ad men of NYC to harken the return of the series Mad Men.  Take a look at the portraits of five of the top men in their field here.

Yes, the offices of Chandelier Creative have a ball pool, which is sometimes used for meetings.  Brilliant!

From my day with Martha Stewart, shooting the cover of Vogue Knitting Holiday 2011!

Marcus Samuelsson for Park & Bond

I headed up to Harlem one morning last month to shoot celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson at his restaurant The Red Rooster for Park and Bond's "Man of Style" section.  See the full interview here.

I love his rumpled look!  He was a great fellow to photo - very kind and gracious.

Park and Bond

I am so excited to see the new labor of love by the Gilt Man team is live!  Park and Bond is a beautiful new menswear site - check it out here.  I shot a bunch of extreme close ups for a series they are running on what every man should know about the essentials.

Sean Avery for Gilt Man

I am excited to see the Sean Avery portraits I shot recently are live in conjunction withe the sale he is curating on Gilt Man.  A NHL player and a fashion maven - pretty cool in my book.   Great working with Sean and editor Tyler Thoreson!

Lands' End FeelGood Videos by Rarebit Productions

Rarebit Productions created the PR and instructional videos for this year's Lands' End FeelGood campaign!  The cute crafty host is none other than Brett Bara, whom I have worked with for years.  Here is the intro video that tells you a little about the campaign:

My partner Kelly Desmond Bray and I produced, shot, and edited these instructional videos,  as well as created three other short PR videos for TV & web press.  See credits here.

And I just saw that Lion Brand's flagship store in Manhattan has been collecting donated squares in their window and now has over 1,400!  They are throwing a party to have volunteers join them together into blankets this Sun Dec 12.   All it takes is a simple square to make a difference!

Ad work for Mayor's Office in the news

Check out the PDNonline feature about what it was like for me to produce and shoot the Campaign to End Human Trafficking for the NYC Mayor's Office.  For more images, see my previous post here.

Ad work for the NYC Mayor's Office

I recently made silhouette portraits of 19 people for an ad campaign, "Let's End Human Trafficking", for the NYC Mayor's Office. The campaign appears in bus shelters and online. I worked with the talented folks at Grey NY: Art Director, Natsuko Bosaka; Art Producer, Jayne Horowitz; Interactive Producer, Naomi White; and Account Executive, Lisa Montana. Thanks guys for a great shoot!

The last two are some favorite out takes. It was a very interesting practice for a portrait photog like me to hide most of the things I think make a connection to the viewer - eyes, mouth, features, tension. At first I set up a front light, dialed down, "just in case" I wanted to retrieve the details later, but I tossed that idea out once I saw how beautiful the silhouette can be. I was delighted to find that a lot of emotion and information can still be conveyed, even enhanced by what is hidden.
